Other materials used for cigar boxes

Wood and tin are not the only materials from which cigar boxes have been made. Cardboard, glass and plastic have all been important in package history.

Man’s incredible ingenuity has also used aluminum, brass, pewter, silver-plate, tin-foil, pottery, fired ceramic, Opaline, and various combinations of the above.

Box designers have been particularly creative in their use of materials when designing upright packaging, boxes in which the cigars stand on end, hence a “mixed media” exhibit of 125 years of uprights.

This distinctive 60’s plastic box by important long-time cigar broker, A.J. “Jerry” Golden, shows all the reasons why plastic is generally unsuitable for cigar boxes: the black is fading, the gold is wearing off, the top is sun-warped, one corner is chipped and the far side lid has been broken-punctured.
